As a leader, you need to think in quarters.
Some believe you should always be firefighting, believing that this approach will ensure your company’s survival.
This mentality could not be further from the truth.
For growth to be sustainable and for your business to remain financially healthy and stable, you need to plan ahead and also have a plan in place for major decisions.
You need to think in “levers” or in terms of variables that you can influence or control to give you the advantages you need to better position your business.
That might mean renegotiating key vendor relationships, landlord agreements, throwing out old systems, and making important hires (or important firings).
You also need to start thinking about systems and standards for interacting with all stakeholders in your business (customers, employees, vendors, etc.). For example, you’ll need to start thinking about customer experience strategy, employee experience strategy, vendor relationship management, etc.
None of this is easy but so, so crucial to the long-term success of your business.
